Also, Sugar will be moving upstairs to the "Bill Motto" room. We were up in that room a few weeks back when Taj played. Not only is the Bill Motto room down-right beautiful, as those who came when we were there before already know, the energy level in that room is huge.

Djs for July:
One of the special items on July's plate is that each of the Sugar resident djs are playing special 1.5 hour closing sets. We figured we deserved to treat ourselves since we are all super-duper stars :))

We are also super stoked to welcome back Raindance's Alia. Alia has been an integral part of the Santa Cruz scene forever and is one of the best djs around. Rob Monroy finishes tonight with a special 1.5 hour closing set. Seriously, don't miss cause Rob kicks ass as you already know.
Tonight, we welcome two very cool friends to Sugar. Dj Das, who migrated from Santa Cruz to Berkeley and used to produce Saturday nights at the Blue Lagoon plus many full moon parties last year will be playing a entire set of his original tracks. Hailing from our friends up north, Jasonian throws down chunky tribal infused funky Eastcoast house with an awesome energetic infectious flair.

Call to Artists

An all day performance event is being planned for May 31st in Santa Cruz starting early noon and continuing until sun down. This event will happen at San Lorenzo Park, an outside public space adjacent to downtown Santa Cruz and surrounded by residential neighborhoods. The intention of this event is to explore interventionist performance art and create space for collaboration and improvisation. By interventionism we bring performances outside the theatre space and place them in a public setting for the creation of community. Collaboration and improvisation will support the role of the performer, dropping the role of audience member.
The blueprint of the event encourages spontaneous performance areas and will include:
•	An open forum for artists whose performances call for a more spontaneous, site specific environment
•	A main stage
•	Band creation area – with musical instruments and encouraged experimental band performances
•	Workshop area
•	Task oriented improvisational scores to participate in and perform for one another
•	Trade area for artisans (non-monetary)
•	Artists who have still-art are welcomed to install their work within the space
Those who contact ahead of time will have the choice to be scheduled into the main stage area and are also encouraged to take their performances outside the main stage for a shift of interaction. Even though this opportunity is offered, our hope is that it will not subtract from the spontaneity of the event or create separation between audience and performer.
We encourage those who perform to teach a workshop during the day to share ideas and art disciplines. The content of the workshop can be connected to your specific performance but is not required to be. There will be a workshop board to write down the time and content of the workshop. Do not be discouraged to perform if you would prefer not to teach a workshop, the workshop is not required but appreciated.
This event is free. Please do not expect to pay for performances, workshops, and entry; or to be paid. This space is for all to share performance and empower one another through teaching and critiquing.
Due to the size of the space and structure of the event we are asking for there to be no amplified music. Sorry if this comes as an inconvenience for some.
If your performance contains fire or open flame please contact us for further notice.

This is a collaborative effort and we want to hear your ideas as well. As much as this email might make the organization sound centralized this is a non-centralized event and we invite all too participate in the functions of making this situation manifest. This event is for all of us and more, so please send your questions, comments, ideas, critiques, and concerns to spacieface@gmail.com. Let’s get ideas spiraling.

Greetings fellow poi enthusiasts,

Now that spring is upon us and the sun is shining into the evening, we are moving our poi class outside. So rather then Mondays at the Vets Hall, class will now be Tuesdays at the San Lorenzo Park (along the river between Water, Ocean, Soquel, and Front). If this is a bad time for you, private and small group classes are also available by request. We are also slightly flexible on the time for this class, so please send comments by email ASAP.

So starting next week, April 8, class information is as follows:

Day: Tuesdays
Time: 6:30 pm- 8:00 pm
Location: San Lorenzo Park (in the field below the bridge)
Price: $12/class, drop-in only (trades are possible if requested)

As before, the class will be open to all levels, whether you are an absolute beginner, advanced spinner, or anyone in between.

Some of the things we will focus on are:
- Foundational moves and their variations.
- Short choreographies where we will practice using transitions and combinations of moves.
- Ways of traveling across a space with our poi in motion.
- Mechanics and aesthetics of poi spinning.
- Incorporating poi skills with movement and dance.

Now that we are outside, there may be opportunities to light up at the end of class for those who wish to and feel they are ready. We will have to figure out the rules and regulations of the park before we do this.

We are also open to requests and suggestions about location and class content

Direct questions and comments to instructors Marina Salonga (831 331 5203, marina@marinadance.com, ) or Dyami Kaplan (831 227 5396, dyamitk@gmail.com).

Class information will be posted on Marina's website at www.marinadance.com/

Now, almost 10 years later, her passion and enthusiasm for the music is stronger than ever. She's frisky, vibrant, and authentic as gold. She comes with a rare flare that grabs you by the ya-ya's and refuses to let go until you have felt the vibration of truth in the center of your soul.
A Love of Art!

Spend Valintine's day with the craft you love!

When: Thursday, February 14, 2008
Time: 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Location: Both Pacific ave. in Santa Cruz, and the El Cerrito Plaza (by BART)!
City: El Cerrito! Santa Cruz! Both!

Valentine's day tends to be depressing - putting stress and expectations on couples while making single folks lonely. Superficial greeting cards and sweets make this more of a commercial frenzy than a celebration of love.

Lets reclaim this cheesy red and pink holiday with all the colors of the rainbow - by doing what we love.

That could be painting, drawing, dancing, singing, playing music, making a collage, sculpting, sketching, taking photos, writing poetry, you name it. This is a celebration of the arts, of beauty and creation, and the undying love we all share.

Bring your art supplies, your sketch-pads, cameras, paints, face-paints, chalk, etc. To downtown Pacific ave. or El Cerrito Plaza on Valentine's day, and make something wonderful.

Completely free for all! D.I.Y. All ages! Come make some friends and reclaim this commercial holiday by expressing love your own way. Anything goes!

***If you can, bring extra materials to share with people you meet (ex: paper and crayons.)***

"A lot of us have a a very strong relationship with art.
Sometimes it goes better then others, but all relationships take work

So on Valentine's Day I think it would be fun to celebrate our eternal, there through thick and thin, romance with art." -Rachael Ann
I am looking for a 3BR house to rent in the Santa Cruz area. I am a student at Cabrillo studying Marketing/Advertising. I am moving in with 2 other roommates that keep to themselves and are very laid back but hard working. Have been looking for a little while now on craigslist and the newspaper but havent found anything yet. I wanted to pay like $1800 for a 3BR but all i have found are like $2100 and up. The Santa Cruz market is so high and almost impossible for a full time student/full time worker. If anyone has a home that they have for rent or were thinking or renting, or possibly have a friend, let me know, it would really help.
Thank You
The Whale Skeleton sculpture is currently set up and available for public viewing at 255 Branceforty . That is only slightly past the Mystery Spot (tourist attraction), across the very next concrete bridge, right after Sun Villa sign, and look left and up slightly. It is on private property but the owner is cool as long as people are respectful and aware. He and his tenants have been very supportive and patient with the scheduling of the installation .
The Sculpture itself is a little shabby looking right now from Playa wear and tear and the stresses of winter storage and re-setup. It is still impressive though. Touch ups and refinements commence in mid-April.
Any Burners wanting to be involved in the set up of this project on The Playa at BM 08, please inquire with me here on Tribe. It took one person 8 hours with an additional 2 person, 3 hour session to set up last time on this site. The systems have been streamlined and with additional crew , the time could be roughly the same, taking into account fatigue and environmental factors at BRC.

Warm Greetings friends and spirit guides!

I am very new to the Santa Cruz area, having
just moved here from San Francisco, living out
of my van while I find the right place to hunker
down and earn the green energy to do so.

I am looking for a nice warm place to stay while
I save the money for my own apartment/room. In
the meantime, I am applying for a work stay at
the Pacific Cultural Center, as well as
beginning work at 2-3 jobs here in lovely
Lightworkersville (Santa Cruz). Ideally you
would need me to house sit and do light chores,
however I am offering fabulous body work
services in exchange for a place to stay,
hopefully with conscious tribe, in a non-tobacco
smoking/incense environment due to allergies.
Other healing herbs are okay. Also have healing
tinctures to share.

I would like to exchange equal value or whatever
Massage
Foot Reflexology
Vortex Healing (advanced)
Rising Star Healing
Shamballa Multidimensional Healing (level III)
Tuning Forks
Advanced Didgeridoo Sound Healing

My rates for Energy work in particular are worth
$150/90 minutes, and are quite deep and relaxing.

Also offering:

Psychic/intuitive readings
Tarot Card Readings
Pet communication
Music Lessons in Didgeridoo, guitar, bass,
djembe, beat boxing, and Native American Flute.

I am thrilled to be a part of the community
here...I feel that what I was searching for in
San Francisco is gradually revealing itself to
me here in Santa Cruz!

I am very positive and fun to be around,
excellent with kids and pets!

Please feel free to call me, as I will check my
phone messages more than my email.
857-383-1110

If I get into Pacific Cultural Center, I won't
be needing a place, but might still enjoy
meeting up!

Bless your heart,

Welcome to Indian Summer everyone! The June gloom of the Sunset is gone, and it's time to have a house party!

I turned 40, my friends Ken and Jason who I have known since second grade also turned 40 this summer. So we are having a reunion weekend, and house party/bbq to celebrate with all the rest of you!

The amazing Chef Craig Howell, (yes he is a real chef), is going to do all the food, we will have a keg of Pilsner Urquell, and ABC and guest star djs' will be throwing down the funky beats until the cops come a knocking. Or maybe later. If you want to spin bring your set!

We are starting around 2pm so don't snooze if you want some great food. Please rsvp so we know how much to make for you. Or just show up late and get drunk and dance. Either way it's on RAIN, FOG, OR SHINE. Indoor and Outdoor space will be provided, and there is plenty of parking in my hood.

Feel free to invite friends and family, this is an open invite to all good people who like to get down.

Peace, and hope to see you there, Aaron
Location: The Dirt Shack
406 Mott Ave. (in the back)
Santa Cruz, CA 95062

Is your costume closet filled with treasures you haven't been wearing? Got an unfinished wearable art project that needs a little push of inspiration? RE-FASHION is the solution!

RE-FASHION is a costume swap event. Bring a bag (big or small) or more of your unwanted costumes, finery, accessories and notions, and something to hold your takeaways. Please, no underwear or swimwear.

The swap begins with a giant collective pile of clothing, the unwanted costumes of all who attend. Everyone is welcome to dive in and find their next new, used items from the pile. Take as little or as much clothing from this pile as you like.

We will have the grill going, so if you want to BBQ something please bring that with you as well. Bring drinks to share, too, please, whatever they may be!

Please note: The event will be in the back of the house in the driveway.

As with all of our events at the DirtShack, a DJ (that would be Sparkinzi) will be spinning tunes for our enjoyment.

Two of the most amazing films of the GDI Summer Series are both about an
hour long. So we chose to create the strangest double bill ever. Both
films are inspiring documentaries about living life as an adventure on
one's own terms.
chronicle of Thor Heyerdahl's hand-built raft expedition and high-seas
adventure from Peru to Tahiti in an attempt to demonstrate that the
inhabitants of the South Sea Islands could have migrated from South
America. *Style Wars*, filmed in New York in 1982, documents a number of

So, there is a good chance that him and I are going to need a ride down to LIB. We live in the Santa Cruz area. We don't mind helping to pay for gas. At this point, we wouldn't let anyone pay our way, we WILL help pay for gas.. Our supplies should be fairly compact (most likely two tents, maybe one, still haven't decided that one (it also depends on my other friend if he'd let me borrow his tent) sleeping bags and clothes, no artwork or extra accessories) Friendly people of course! ^_^

The Santa Cruz Art Conspiracy is an attempt to share and document some of the creative efforts of artists in Santa Cruz, California working to blur the lines between art and life, and between the personal and the political.

The focus is on the cathartic process of creating art, collaboration and community, conceptional art and performance. Non-commercial, non-institutional, we are, at heart, believers in the importance of DIY (do-it-yourself).

Well beyond the oft-heard complaint about lack of gallery space, our streets, our neighborhoods, our public spaces should be places of art and performance.

The Santa Cruz Art Conspiracy website documents some of the non-institutional non-commerical art efforts in Santa Cruz. It is a historical record stretching as far into the past as we can remember and as far into the future as art still matters. Your contributions and suggestions are welcome. http://scartconspiracy.blogspot.com
>
> Greetings all lovers of Santa Cruz, and friends beyond,
>
> The bell is tolling for the heritage of Pleasure Point and maybe
the last remaining truly historical properties
> as well.
>
> The Pleasure Point Roadhouse SHOULD be a city landmark.
>
> Built beautifully out of old growth redwood trees in 1902 as a
saloon, the Pleasure Point Roadhouse, whose Prohibition-era brothel
inspired the name for this coastal area, was also a gas station and
market for HWY 1, a speakeasy during prohibition, and a home for many
artists and alternative minded people over the decades.
>
> The wood house overlooking Monterey Bay, its carriage house, and
several 90-year-old bungalows are private property now, and owner
Leila Naslund, who has evicted all the tenants (some who have been
there over 15 years), doesn't want it to be designated for
preservation. Her family plans to develop and destroy the existing
property within the next few months under the excuse that it is too
far gone.
>
> Nonetheless, the city's board of supervisors added the Pleasure
Point Roadhouse to a list of properties they'll consider designating
as historic resources at a meeting March 27th.
>
> PLEASE GO TO THIS MEETING IF YOU CARE ABOUT SAVING THIS PROPERTY!
>
> "It seems like it means a lot to the community," says Supervisor
Jan Beautz, who recommended that the house be considered for
designation. A grassroots group has collected hundreds of signatures
on a petition in support of the designation of the roadhouse, a two-
story wood-frame structure with unique Craftsman-style influences.
>
> "It's probably the last undeveloped big piece of property on the
coast. It's just timeless," says Charles Paulden, leader of a group
called People for the Preservation of Pleasure Point. "It's like 100
years ago when you step onto that property."
>
> The cottages next door to the roadhouse were demolished last year
to make way for HUGE Orange County styled condos and many fear the
same will happen to the roadhouse property if it's not designated.
>
> "Pleasure Point was a beach-cottage community until the last five
years. It's not too far gone yet," Paulden says. "I would like all of
Pleasure Point to be preserved, but right now I would like to save
one little bit of it."
>
> Paulden wants to see the roadhouse restored as a museum or
community center. Please contact Charles at: yogacharles@... if you
would like to help.
>
> Although its heyday during Prohibition is long gone, the Pleasure
Point Roadhouse remains a popular local icon. "I remember going to
parties in that building back in the 70s. I've always thought it was
a very cool structure" says Carolyn Swift, director of the nearby
Capitola Museum. "For a building of that style to survive, with the
carriage house and these little additional 1920s bungalows, that's
pretty rare."
>
> The LAST Pleasure Point Roadhouse party is THIS SATURDAY, MARCH

If you ever partied at "Casa Del Mar", spent time at this beautiful property, or just looked at and wondered at that funky old house with the HUGE rotating sculpture in front of it overlooking the Monterrey Bay in Pleasure Point? Well now is the time to help save it against more unwanted development in the east side of Santa Cruz.

This house is the last remaining original structure that is part of the history of how Pleasure Point came to be. It was a gas station, roadhouse, store, bordello, hotel, and home to many eclectic and artistic people over the years. And now the owner has given it up to her daughters to knock down and develop into another super CONDO structure for the rich. When will it end? Never..... but at least you can have a say before it all goes the way of the O.C.

Please read and sign the petition below, pass on this info to EVERYONE WHO CARES:
Thank you for supporting the Pleasure Point Roadhouse.
The Supervisors will hear this again March 27th, at
last word.We need to get in contact with them to point
out how important the Roadhouse is to preserve for the
future.
Please encourage your friends to support us as well.
If we can get the Pleasure Point businesses to contact
the Supervisors, they well listen more closely.
Let them know how important this is for the business
community.
Your friends, who trust you, can learn about this
chance to preserve and improve our community.
Please have them sign the petition.
You can call your Supervisor at 454-2200 and express
your desire to preserve a part of our community.

It is too bad that we do not have the same level of
philanthropic participation that the Santa Clara
There was an article about the Google Millionaires

Thank you all for entertaining a note from me. Please run this editorial up your contact list for this one if you can.

Wes Anthony is definitely the kind of business owner that I want to see stay in the Down Town environment. He is a totally positive role model for many, many young musicians and he provides a safe place where we (old and young) people can go listen to fresh live acts, take dance classes, have a great meal in a small, intimate setting. This is a rare venue and I think ideally located to serve ALL the people of the county.

I cant imagine that the small handful of tenants would prefer the noise made by the annual fights outside the Blue Lagoon to that made by young people getting their first taste of a live stage experience. I feel very strongly that if we do not support business owners like Wes, we will have no noise on Pacific Avenue but police sirens; no happy shoppers spending money, no restaurant patrons on their way home after a fine meal, no students patronizing the local Coffee shops,,,nada. The only noise they / we will be left with will be from whatever element is left over after we shut down businesses like E-3, this is not speculation or fear tactics on my part, we have done stuff like this before.

Please contact Chief Vogel, Planners Alex Khoury and Greg Larsen and tell them that there is plenty of room for compromise on this one and that talk of shutting down a truly great business is not conducive to a healthy Down Town environment.

Bear in mind that the first E, in E-3 is education. Wes is as good as his word on this one and I have personally seen him in action and I have one of his beneficiaries in my house as proof if you want to talk about it.

Thanks for reading this all, and for whatever noise you can make on Wess behalf.

Psychedelic research in humans? Is that even legal?
After decades of regulatory restriction, scientists in the U.S. are again studying psychedelics in humans. In the intervening decades, science has dramatically advanced, with many findings and tools relevant to psychedelics. While studies using animals and cells have deepened our knowledge, they have done so without lessening our puzzlement. Can scientific research with human volunteers adequately address the unusual effects of psychedelics? Matthew Baggott will discuss the challenges of human psychedelic research and what we can hope to learn. He will outline a modest program for research, emphasizing measurement of phenomenology as an important step and illustrate the approach with preliminary results from his ongoing research.

Matthew Baggott is a graduate student in neuroscience at the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute, University of California Berkeley. In the mid 1990s, he was part of the first team of researchers to gain federal funding to study MDMA in humans. In his current research, he continues to study the clinical pharmacology and neuroscience of MDMA and classical psychedelics.
